Mission/Vision
The Institute for Inquiry (IFI), an independent, 501c3 nonprofit organization, has created www.instituteforinquiry.org to demonstrate a new kind of journalism. We are consciously departing from longstanding ideas of journalism which assume that an informed, participatory public is one that can reason through economic and political interests. In a world rapidly defined by biological and cultural change, IFI believes new reasoning is required. Now, as never before, public ignorance of the physical fabric of biological and cultural life has a material impact on the world being made. To become informed participants in today's world means learning what, exactly, is being conserved, innovated, or foreclosed upon. IFI proposes a paradigmatic shift in journalistic representation and investigation, online and amongst a global public.
A good deal of thought has gone into the architecture of IFI's online inquiry model with the desire to see it replicated by others and refined over time into a global institution for bio-culturally based news. Key elements include: (1) lines and layers of questioning that intuit viewer engagement; and, (2) content production that unfolds over time through presentations of lead and network contributors. Lead contributors are interviewed by IFI and serve to initiate an area of inquiry. Network contributors are selected from project proposals, which are submitted in response to IFI's network invitations. Our goal is to create a stream of content production that includes contributions from researchers, artists, scholars, educators, and others, across cultures.
